Policy Statement
53two is committed to safeguarding adults who may be at risk of abuse, harm or neglect. We believe that every adult has the right to live free from abuse, exploitation, and neglect. This policy outlines our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment across all our activities—both in the theatre and the arts bar—and to promoting the wellbeing, dignity, and rights of all people who engage with us.
1. Purpose and Scope
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, trustees, contractors, and freelance practitioners working on behalf of 53two. It applies to all activities and events run by or in partnership with 53two, including those held in the theatre, bar, rehearsal spaces, and during outreach or community work.
2. Definitions
• Adult at Risk: A person aged 18 or over who has needs for care and support and is at risk of or experiencing abuse or neglect, and as a result is unable to protect themselves.
• Abuse may include physical, emotional, sexual, financial abuse, neglect, discrimination, self-neglect, domestic abuse, or organisational abuse.
3. Our Commitments
• Promote an environment where everyone feels safe and respected.
• Take all concerns or allegations of abuse seriously and respond appropriately.
• Ensure all staff and volunteers are aware of their safeguarding responsibilities.
• Appoint a designated Safeguarding Lead.
• Comply with relevant legislation including the Care Act 2014 and GDPR.
• Work in partnership with local safeguarding boards and agencies where appropriate.
4. Recognising Abuse
All members of the 53two team should be alert to the potential signs of abuse, which may include:
• Unexplained injuries or changes in behaviour
• Sudden financial difficulties
• Withdrawal or isolation
• Fear, anxiety, or confusion
Staff and volunteers are not responsible for deciding whether or not abuse has taken place but must report any concerns.
5. Reporting and Responding to Concerns
If anyone working at or with 53two has a safeguarding concern:
• Act immediately to ensure the adult is safe.
• Report the concern to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
• Record the concern in writing, including date, time, people involved, and details of the concern.
• The DSL will assess the situation and, if necessary, contact local adult safeguarding services.
